Eating San Francisco: Rich Table

Dried Porcini Doughnuts

These were the best thing we ordered. They are a must! It's a light, fluffy, savory doughnut that packs a lot of flavor due to the porcini dust sprinkled on them. Soft and delicious. The white dip is melted Raclette cheese which added another dimension of flavor, but I enjoyed the doughnuts by themselves just as much.

Sardine Chip

Rich Table is famous for this chip creation, but I found it to be just okay. I'm glad we just ordered one, as they were extremely salty. Packs a lot of flavor in each bite. I enjoyed the horseradish creme that came with it. Wish I would have held on to it to dip the bread in.

Douglas Fir Levian Bread

I love all bread and butter, so not much to say about this dish. It was quite herb-y tasting, and the bread was served at the perfect temperature that the butter melted perfectly when spread.

Broccoli and Sorrel Soup

This soup tasted too green and healthy for me. I felt like I was drinking a heated up version of one of those green juice cleanse juices.

Beef Tagliatelle

This was a fancy version of hamburger helper. At first taste, it almost reminds one of dried vomit. After the initial vomit taste, one begins to appreciate the tagliatelle's perfect al dente texture.

Bone Marrow Roasted Cauliflower

A flavorful yet light dish. The white sauce at the bottom was a delicious creamy mandarinquat sauce that I wish they put more of. I ran out of sauce by the time I reached my third chunk of cauliflower!

Dulce de Leche

Meh. Interesting use of lime, but the cake was nothing special.

There is no dress code at Rich Table, and I kind of regretted not wearing yoga pants to feast. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious. Waiters were knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the menu items. Their entrees apparently rotate every 3 weeks or so but it seemed as if the waiter had tried everything--he gave us helpful descriptions of all the dishes that we were interested in.  Porcini doughnuts and sardine chips are always on the menu due to their popularity. Although we made a reservation a couple weeks in advance, the only table they had available was at their 9:30 slot on Sunday night. Overall, the food was slightly underwhelming. The only reason why I would go back to Rich Table would be for the Porcini Doughnuts. If I lived in San Francisco, I would probably go in every Friday night and order 6 servings of these doughnuts to go and eat them while laying in bed and fall asleep with porcini dust and cheese all over me. They are so damn good.

One sentence review of restaurant: I find it hard to believe that getting reservations at Rich Table is difficult.
